State Senate For Immediate Release: April 20, 2009 COFFEE REFORMS PROCESS TO PROTECT RAPE VICTIMS President Pro Tem Glenn Coffee applauded the signing of Senate Bill 894 into law that will bring needed medical protection to rape victims. The provisions in Senate Bill 894, authored by Pro Tem Coffee, allow a rape victim to have access to medical care immediately without having to file legal charges against her attacker. Currently, a nurse or other medical professional is required to contact local law enforcement at the time a victim seeks medical attention. Rape victims are often too traumatized to seek medical assistance when they know their case will be immediately reported to law enforcement. Senate Bill 894 passed the Senate
with a 46-0 vote, and the House with 97-0 vote.
Through Senate Bill 894, Oklahoma is also brought
into compliance with the federal Violence Against
